Are you planning a visit to the most immersive tiki bar in Walt Disney World? Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort remains one of the hardest “reservations” to get—mostly because they don’t take reservations!
However, 2026 has brought some massive changes to how the Grotto operates. From earlier opening hours to a new digital queue system, here is everything you need to know to snag a seat and a souvenir mug.

What’s New at Trader Sam’s in 2026?
If you haven’t visited since 2024 or 2025, the “Trader Sam’s Shuffle” looks a lot different now.
1. New Operating Hours (Opening Earlier!)
The biggest news for 2026 is that Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto has officially moved its opening time from 3:00 PM to 11:00 AM daily.
- Grog Grotto (Indoor): 11:00 AM – 12:00 AM
- Tiki Terrace (Outdoor): 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM
This is a game-changer for those looking for a midday break from the Magic Kingdom. You can now hop on the monorail for a “liquid lunch” and be back in the parks by mid-afternoon.
2. The Digital Walk-Up List
Gone are the days of standing in a physical line for two hours just to put your name on a list. You can now join the Digital Walk-Up Waitlist directly through the My Disney Experience (MDE) app.
How to join the queue:
- Open the MDE App.
- Search for “Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto.”
- Click “Join Walk-Up List.”
- Important: You must be physically present at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort (or very close by) to join. The app uses geofencing to ensure you are on-property.
3. Age Restrictions
The family-friendly window has shifted with the new hours:
- All Ages: 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM
- 21+ Only: 8:00 PM – 12:00 AM

Grog Grotto vs. The Beak and Barrel
With the recent opening of The Beak and Barrel (the new Pirates of the Caribbean lounge in Magic Kingdom), many fans are asking: which one is better?
While both offer incredible animatronics and “storm” effects, there are key differences:
- Reservations: Unlike Trader Sam’s, The Beak and Barrel requires Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs), which fill up 60 days out.
- Location: The Grotto is a perfect escape from the park heat, while the Beak and Barrel keeps you right in the heart of Adventureland.
- Time Limits: The Beak and Barrel has a strict 45-minute limit, whereas the Grotto is more relaxed once you are inside.

Trader Sam’s 2026 Menu Highlights & Souvenir Mugs
While the classics remain, prices have seen slight adjustments for the 2026 season. Here are the fan favorites:
Signature Cocktails
- HippopotoMai-Tai: The classic tiki drink. ($19.50 / ~$32.00 with souvenir glass).
- The Nautilus: Perfect for two or more explorers. ($38.00 / ~$65.00 with the massive Nautilus bowl).
- Uh-Oa!: Beware the tiki goddess! This drink triggers a room-wide “storm” effect. ($28.50).
- Polynesian Pearl: A smoother, creamier drink. The pearl is yours to keep! ($24.50).
Small Bites (Served 11 AM – 10 PM)
- Kahuna Tuna Sushi Roll: ($19.00)
- Kalua Pork Tacos: ($11.50)
- Thai Chicken Flatbread: ($15.00)

Pro-Tips for Success in 2026
- Join the List at 11:00 AM Sharp: Even with the earlier opening, the Grotto only seats about 50 people. If you aren’t on the list within the first 10 minutes, expect a 2+ hour wait.
- The “Tiki Terrace” Backup: If the indoor Grotto is full, the outdoor Tiki Terrace serves the same drinks and food. You won’t get the “explosions” or “storms” when you order, but you get the same delicious Rum and live music.
- Check for Limited Edition Mugs: 2026 is expected to bring new seasonal mug releases. Always ask your server if there are any “off-menu” or limited-time mugs available.
- No Reservations: Remember, you cannot book this on the 60-day dining window. It is walk-up only!
- Go with a Small Group: The bar is small and seating is limited. Parties of four or fewer are often seated more quickly than larger groups.
- Go Off-Peak: Avoid holidays and weekends if possible.
My Final Verdict: Is it Worth the Hype in 2026?
After years of visiting the Grotto, I can safely say that even with the 2026 price hikes and the competitive digital queue, Trader Sam’s is still the most “Disney” experience you can have outside of the theme parks.
There is a specific kind of magic that happens when a room full of strangers starts chanting “Uh-Oa!” in unison while the “windows” transform into an erupting volcano. It’s silly, it’s loud, and it’s a perfect reminder that Disney is at its best when it doesn’t take itself too seriously.
My best advice for 2026? Don’t stress the wait. If the digital queue is long, grab a Spikey Pineapple at the Tiki Terrace, listen to the live ukelele music, and enjoy the Polynesian breeze. Whether you’re inside for the show or outside for the sunset, you’re in paradise.
